This isn’t really a suprise to anyone, as the news broke some time ago – however the Pistons have finally scheduled a press conference for Wednesday where they are expected to announce the 4 year deal with Lawrence Frank.
Frank, an assistant coach with Boston last season and a former head coach in New Jersey replaces John Kuester, who was fired by the Pistons in June after they missed the playoffs in both of his two seasons.
After considering many options, including former bad boy Bill Laimbeer, many fans are puzzled over the hire. Frank certainly doesn’t have the pedigree as some of the other potentials, but perhaps that’s what makes him the smart hire. Each of the other candidates had something that made them stand out as a risky hire. Laimbeer and Sampson would have made it the third straight rookie coach hiring, as neither have coached in the the NBA before – Sampson has control issues, having been put on probation for breaking recruiting rules with both Oklahoma and then immediately violating that probation while coaching at Indiana. Woodson brings with him a history, having been an assistant during the 2004 championship with the Pistons, however it’s this history that most likely ended his chance with the Pistons. Wouldn’t want to bring in another coach in the vein of Curry or Kuester.
Let’s take a look at the numbers, and maybe make some sense of what Tom Gores and Joe Dumars see in this seemingly mediocre coach.
