A beloved voice in Hockeytown will be stepping away temporarily.
The Detroit Red Wings announced that Saturday’s game will be the final broadcast for longtime analyst Mickey Redmond before he undergoes a medical procedure to address chronic neck issues. Redmond revealed he will be having cervical spine fusion surgery and will take time away from the booth during his recovery.

“After tonight’s game, I’ll be taking some time away from my analyst duties as I address chronic neck issues that have led me to need cervical spine fusion surgery,” Redmond said in a statement. “It’s never ideal to miss time during a season, but I was luckily able to line the procedure up with several nationally televised games and the Olympic Break. It’s been an incredible season so far in Hockeytown, and I’m looking forward to being back behind the microphone for our exciting playoff run.”
The Red Wings organization echoed their full support for one of the most iconic figures in franchise history.
“Mickey has the support of his Red Wings family, and we appreciate that he’s prioritizing health,” the team said. “Mickey decided to wait on having this procedure until a time that was best for the broadcast, for the team, and ultimately for the fans – a great example of what an incredible teammate he is both on and off the air. Everyone in the organization will keep him in our thoughts and will do anything needed to support his recovery.”
Redmond, a former Red Wings player and Stanley Cup champion, has been a staple of Detroit broadcasts for decades, known for his passion, humor, and deep love for the team and its fans. While he’ll be missed during his absence, the expectation is that he will return later in the season once fully recovered.
For now, Red Wings fans will savor one more broadcast with “Mickey Redmond Hockey” before he steps away to focus on his health, with hopes of hearing his voice again as Detroit makes its push toward the postseason.
