One Lion thinks Eric Ebron could be the next Jimmy Graham

When the Detroit Lions selected Eric Ebron with the 10th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, most experts and fans had one of two opinions. Some said he was going to be the next Jimmy Graham while others claimed it was way too high to draft a tight end. Following Ebron’s rookie campaign in which he struggled mightily, many fans are now just hoping he becomes a serviceable option for the Lions offense. One new Lion disagrees with that and still sees the potential for Ebron to be great.

This offseason, the Lions went out and signed Lance Moore hoping he could potentially crack the 53-man roster. Moore, of course, has spent the majority of his NFL career playing with the New Orleans Saints. While with the Saints, he had the opportunity to play with Graham and believes that Ebron has a chance to be a similar talent.

“I mean, obviously, Jimmy’s bigger, but athletically, I think they’re on the same page, on the same level,” Moore said. “I think the sky’s the limit for Eric.”

One similarity is that both Graham and Ebron struggled to produce in their rookie seasons. Everyone knows Graham is one of the top tight ends in the NFL, but many forget he only had 31 catches for 357 yards in his rookie campaign. Similarly, Ebron grabbed 25 catches for 248 yards in his first season. Obviously, it is highly unlikely Ebron will match Graham’s second-year numbers, 99 catches for 1,310 yards, but it does illustrate that it can take some time to adjust to the NFL.

Now that Moore has had the chance to spend some time working out with Ebron, including some workouts organized by Matthew Stafford last month at Georgia Tech, he is very optimistic the second-year tight end has a bright future ahead of him.

“He looked really good” in the workouts, Moore said. “He looked fast, he looked strong. It looked like he was good in and out of his transition. He caught the ball fairly well, which everybody’s been talking about. But I worked with him, just kind of talking to him about what he’s doing when the ball’s in the air. I think he’ll be a guy that, once he gains his confidence back, mentally in himself, that the physical will be all taken care of.”

Whether or not Ebron becomes the next Jimmy Graham remains to be seen, but if he can have a breakout season in 2015, the Lions offense could be something vert special.
