Detroit Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrazek recently revealed his special mask he’ll be wearing for the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto this fall. Now he’s shown us the mask he’ll be wearing with the Red Wings this year.
As with his previous masks, this year’s edition was painted by Dave Gunnarsson of DaveArt. Because this season will be Detroit’s last at historic Joe Louis Arena, Mrazek decided to commemorate the occasion by paying tribute to two of the best players to have ever skated on the Joe’s ice – Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman.
On one side, Gordie Howe’s appearance at the 1980 NHL All-Star game at the Joe is featured. On the other side is Steve Yzerman, seen shaking hands with owner Mike Illitch after being drafted in 1983. Both images are drawn with a sketch pen rather than traditional paint, a newer feature from DaveArt.
We’re looking forward to seeing Mrazek shut down opposing teams while wearing this beauty of a mask during the final season at Joe Louis Arena.
