Pistons win fifth straight with 112-105 decision over Hornets

The Detroit Pistons are officially on a roll.

Two days following 16-point drubbing over the Orlando Magic, the Pistons doubled down on Friday by earning a mostly heavy handed 112-105 win over the Charlotte Hornets.

The Hornets, who entered the evening having won 11 of their last 13, ran into a Pistons team that appears to be heating up at just the right time. Detroit’s victory is their fifth straight, all coming in the midst of a nine-game homestand.

Detroit led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter before a late lapse yielded a 23-2 Charlotte run that briefly trimmed the Pistons’ lead to five.

After losing their first two matchups earlier this season, the Pistons wasted no time jumping all over Hornets this time around, scoring 36 first quarter points and a season-high 72 in the first half. Charlotte’s lone saving grace came in the form of Kemba Walker, who scored 25 first half points including a half-court bomb that pulled his team within 16 points at intermission.

The Pistons (39-34) had no shortage of significant contributors, with Marcus Morris scoring 19 of his 20 points in the first half while Andre Drummond turned in yet another impressive performance, springing to life for 18 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope continued his strong play of late, scoring 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He’s now averaging 20 points over his last eight games.

With the victory, the Pistons have stretched out a two game lead over the Chicago Bulls for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. The Wizards, following a double-overtime loss to the Timberwolves, are now 3.5 games back of the eighth spot.
