The next head coach of the Detroit Lions is…

Following Sunday’s complete embarrassment in Chicago against the Bears, it has to be only a matter of time before the Detroit Lions announce that they have fired Jim Caldwell, right? Well, we are talking about the Lions and the Ford family, so anything is possible, but it’s time for Martha Ford to set her love for Caldwell aside and do what’s best for the future of the franchise.

If the Lions do in fact fire Caldwell during the season, it would seem like a good possibility that current defensive coordinator Teryl Austin would become the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Austin’s name has been brought up time and time again over the past couple of seasons as a head coach candidate, but it is likely that Bob Quinn would bring in his own guy to take over for 2017.

Assuming that Quinn would go a different route for 2017, some Detroit Sports Nation writers gave their two cents on which candidate would best for the job.

Pick for next head coach: Matt Patricia – Defensive Coordinator for the New England Patriots

Matt Patricia, in my opinion,  has done a stellar job as a defensive coordinator of the Patriots while spending multiple seasons under one of the best head coaches in the history of the game. I see nothing wrong with modeling our franchise after the Patriots, given that they are the most successful in this century.

Pick for next head coach: Josh McDaniels – Offensive Coordinator for the New England Patriots

My head coach candidate is Josh McDaniels. We need someone creative and on the same page as our GM. McDaniels Denver days initially scared me off, but  hopefully he has learned from his mistakes and has developed a little since. Matthew Stafford has been looking good running a methodical, quick pass offense that is similar to what McDaniels employs in New England.

Pick for next head coach: Matt Patricia – Defensive Coordinator for the New England Patriots

Matt Patricia has proven that he can run a defense and has earned the right to be a head coach in the NFL. He is extremely smart, he could have gone into rocket science, and a smart coach is exactly what the Lions need. Coming from New England, Patricia has had the luxury of learning the ropes under the great Bill Belichick and considering that Bob Quinn also came from the Patriots, this move could be just a matter of time.

Pick for the next head coach: John Harbaugh – Head Coach of the Baltimore Ravens

The Harbaugh brother with a Superbowl trophy would be a perfect fit in Detroit. John Harbaugh made Jim Caldwell look like a good offensive coordinator, and has proven he can build talent in the trenches and along the line. He made people ask the question “is Joe Flacco elite?”, so imagine what he can do with Matthew Stafford.
