Tigers News and Notes: Victor Martinez returns, Picture Day in Lakeland, Cespedes shows off speed

Sharing is caring!

Saturday brought a rainy day to Lakeland, Florida and the Detroit Tigers were forced to hold their workouts indoors. That being said, the rain did not stop the Tigers from holding their annual Picture Day. In addition, making his first appearance at Spring Training was a certain Tigers designated hitter.

V-Mart is in the House

Victor Martinez has officially reported to Spring Training and he was just in time for Picture Day, though he is not expected to start working out with the team until Monday. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus knows Martinez is chomping at the bit to get going but will keep a close eye on the veteran. Martinez, of course, is working on coming back from knee surgery and it is still unknown if he will be ready for Opening Day.

Alex Avila Update

Tigers catcher Alex Avila sat out yesterday’s workout with a sore back, a problem he had a couple of times last year. According to Ausmus, Avila seems to be feeling better already. Hopefully the changes the Tigers are making with their catcher will keep him injury-free this season.

Cespedes Shows His Speed

Tigers outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is not known as a speed demon, but he is impressing Ausmus so far this spring. Yesterday Cespedes said that he wants to play in Detroit for a long time.

Yesterday was also Picture Day for the team so we got a chance to see what these guys will look like in uniform. Here’s a glimpse:

Only Two Days Until the First Spring Game

The Tigers will play their first game on Monday against Florida Southern. Tim Melville will be the starting pitcher for Detroit, a decision that was made by Ausmus so Tigers starting pitchers will all get the correct number of starts during the spring.
