The Lead

Galli shared the news in a heartfelt message, making it clear the decision was his.

“I am so thankful for 15 years at WXYZ Detroit,” Galli wrote. “I am really excited for what’s next in my hometown.”

For viewers across Metro Detroit, this marks the end of an era.

A Staple of Detroit Sports Coverage

Since joining WXYZ in 2011, Galli has been a constant presence in Detroit sports.

As sports director, he regularly covered the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons, while also dedicating significant attention to Michigan, Michigan State, and local high school athletics.

He became a familiar face for fans, appearing on 7 News Detroit at 5, 6, and 11 p.m., and extending his reach on TV20 Detroit.

Galli worked alongside respected names like Don Shane and Tom Leyden early in his career, quickly establishing himself as one of the city’s most trusted voices in sports media.

Award-Winning Career

Galli’s work didn’t just resonate locally, it earned statewide and national recognition.

He was named Michigan Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association in both 2018 and 2021. He also earned multiple Emmy Awards, including honors for Excellence in Sports Reporting and Excellence in Sports Anchoring.

His storytelling ability and connection with audiences set him apart.

Michigan Football and Viral Moments

Galli built a strong connection with the University of Michigan football program over the years.

He conducted weekly interviews with head coach Jim Harbaugh throughout Harbaugh’s tenure, giving fans unique and consistent access to one of college football’s biggest programs.

During Michigan’s 2023 national championship run, Galli’s coverage reached millions on social media. One of his most widely shared moments came during the Rose Bowl, when he interviewed Jim Harbaugh’s parents, Jack and Jackie, capturing the emotion of the moment in a way that resonated far beyond Michigan fans.

He also hosted Inside Michigan Football with Jim Harbaugh during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, further cementing his presence in the college football space.

More Than Just Sports

Before becoming sports director, Galli showed his versatility by anchoring The Now Detroit, WXYZ’s 4 p.m. news program from 2014 to 2015.

But sports remained his calling, and where he made his biggest impact.

What’s Next

Galli said he plans to work more independently moving forward, focusing on opportunities that allow him greater flexibility, especially spending more time with his wife and children.

“I’m excited to work more independently in this new chapter,” he shared.

While his time at Channel 7 is coming to a close, Galli made it clear that his connection to Detroit—and its sports scene, is far from over.

The Bottom Line

Brad Galli wasn’t just a sports anchor, he was part of the fabric of Detroit sports coverage for over a decade.

Now, he turns the page.

And whatever comes next, you can bet Detroit will be watching
