KALAMAZOO, MI — Happy February everyone! With the calendar officially turning the page today, we’re heading into the home stretch of the NCAA Hockey season. Roughly 5 weeks remain for teams to make a move in the standings, and impress the NCAA Tournament committee.
Every Division 1 hockey team based in the State of Michigan, with the exception of Northern Michigan, is in action this opening weekend of the month, highlighted by a series between forever rivals, Michigan and Michigan State. Before we preview each matchup involving a Michigan-based team, here is a quick look at the CCHA & WCHA standings.

Michigan vs Michigan State — Friday 6:35p on Big Ten Network @ U-M, Saturday 4:05p on FSD @ Joe Louis Arena — The in-state rivals are set to meet for the final time of the season this weekend. Oddly enough, this is a matchup featuring the last and next to last place teams in the CCHA. This will be the 4th and 5th times the two meet in 2012-13. Michigan took the opening game on November 9th with a 5-1 win in Ann Arbor, but Michigan State came right back with a 7-2 drubbing of their own the next night in front of their home fans. The Spartans and Wolverines also met in the 3rd place game of the Great Lakes Invitational, with Michigan winning 5-2. Both teams are having seasons to forget, but both would love nothing more than to send their rival to the CCHA basement.
#6 Western Michigan @ Ferris State — Friday & Saturday at 7:05pm – The 6th ranked and CCHA leading Broncos pack their bags for a 2-game weekend trip up US-131 to face the Ferris State Bulldogs in what will be a very entertaining series. Western has a 2-0-0 record against the Bulldogs this year, following a sweep of FSU in Kalamazoo in early December. WMU took the 1st game 4-2, and the 2nd game 2-1. This time, Ferris State will have their hometown crowd on their side as they look to move up in the CCHA standings, and knock the Broncos from the CCHA lead.
Lake Superior State @ Bowling Green – Friday & Saturday at 7:05p – The Lakers look to rebound following a sweep at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes and will attempt to take their anger out against Bowling Green. LSSU heads down I-75 for a 2-game series against a Falcons team that has had some key 2nd half wins, most notably against Notre Dame, and Western Michigan.
Michigan Tech @ Nebraska-Omaha — Friday at 8:37p ET, Saturday at 8:07p ET – Michigan Tech will look to avoid a season sweep by the Mavericks with a pair of weekend games in Omaha. Since wining the GLI at the end of December, Tech has only one win and once again finds themselves in the bottom cellar of the WCHA standings. MTU and UNO played in early November in Houghton, with Nebraska-Omaha taking both games by scores of 2-1, and 5-3.
Northern Michigan is off this weekend.
Enjoy a great weekend of College Hockey action around the State of Michigan! Look for recaps at the end of each night.
