If available, should the Lions draft RB Todd Gurley?

The 2015 NFL Draft will begin on Thursday, April 30th and it seems like everybody under the sun has a different opinion on which position the Detroit Lions should take with their first round pick.

I will tell you right now, I am almost never in favor of drafting a running back in the first round, regardless of which pick it may be. But what if former University of Georgia running back Todd Gurley happens to slip to number 23? What if the Lions have the opportunity to draft the player many are calling a “can’t miss superstar?”

Last season the NFL’s leading rusher was Demarco Murray of the Dallas Cowboys. Did Murray claim the rushing title because he is the best thing since sliced bread, or was it the Cowboys’ dominant offensive line that featured two Pro-Bowl players that cleared the path for him to rush for 1,845 yards?

In my opinion, it’s a combination of both, but if I had the choice between drafting a Pro-Bowl caliber running back or a Pro-Bowl caliber offensive lineman, I would take the latter any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Let’s say for the sake of argument Murray was a member of the 2014 Detroit Lions instead of the Cowboys. Though there is no way to prove this, I am confident in saying Murray would not have led the league in rushing, or even come close. After all, Murray would have been trying to rush behind a Detroit offensive line that was below average, and that’s being kind.

If Gurley happens to be available when the 23rd pick comes around, the Lions will be left with what many experts will say is a very tough decision. Gurley is believed by many to be a can’t-miss-type prospect that could be a star in the league for years to come. In my opinion, his success all depends on what type of offensive line he is running behind.

I am here to tell you that the decision whether or not to draft Gurley if he is available is a no-brainer.

If that scenario happens, the Lions need to take a deep breath and pick an offensive lineman. They desperately need to draft a player that will protect Matthew Stafford from being sacked 45 times like he was in 2014.

Unfortunately, no-brainer decisions seem to be just the type of decisions Martin Mayhew and the Lions brass are very good at screwing up. Let’s hope they can turn things around and make the right pick this time.

What do you think Nation? Should the Lions take the bait and draft Todd Gurley if he is available or should they take an offensive lineman? Maybe you believe they should draft a different position? The NFL Draft is right around the corner, let us know your thoughts.
