NHL, Players Reach Agreement; Season Starts Jan 19

Finally.

After more than 4 months of painstaking negotiations and without a doubt the most asinine labor dispute in sports history, the National Hockey League and its players union, the NHLPA, came to an agreement in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Finally.

With more than half the season already cancelled, including the 2013 Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the All-Star Game in Columbus, Ohio, we can at last get back to what we know and what we love about hockey. It’s time to drop the puck.

NHL Lockout: Day 93 — With Season Hanging By A Thread, What’s Next?

As the tragedy that is the 2012 NHL Lockout approaches 100 days next week, the league and the players are no closer to a deal that might be able to save the 2012-13 season. Despite efforts led by the Players Association last week to meet again with Federal Mediators involved, talks went nowhere and the NHL followed that up by cancelling another round of games, this time through December 30th. Red Wings, Ericsson Agree to 3 Year Deal

On the eve of free agency, the Red Wings have come to terms with Jonathan Ericsson, meaning they will return five of their top 7 defensemen from last season. Ruslan Salei will not be offered a contract, and Brian Rafalski has opted out of the last year of his 5 year, $30M contract for retirement. Ericsson was taken by the Wings at 291st overall, the last pick in the 2002 draft. Ericsson’s will be under contract with the Wings for three seasons, at a cap hit of $3.25M.
