The Detroit Tigers are coming off their second straight series win and have now won 5 out of 7. As the calendar gets ready to flip to July, it seems as though the Tigers are heating up at the right time. Last series against the White Sox included a rain out and a James McCann walk off home run to cap a series victory. Despite the heart of the order, Cabrera, V. Martinez, Cespedes, J.D. Martinez, going a combine 1-15 on Sunday, all four players have been catching fire. If these guys stay hot they sure are going to give plenty of pitchers fits and drive Detroit to another playoff berth.
Tonight starts another 3 game interleague series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Heading to the mound in Game 1 for the Tigers is interleague ace and Tigers ace, Justin Verlander. Verlander is making his first start since being scratched last week with back tightness and only his third start of the season. Verlander has looked good in his first two starts of the season and interleague play seems to be a great place for him to pick up his first win of the season.
Standing in the Tigers way of another series victory is the NL Central’s second place team the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh currently sits 9 games back in the NL Central at 42-33 with a bottom third offense, but the second best pitching staff in all of baseball. While the Tigers hitters have been heating up lately, they will have their work cut out for them against this Pirates pitching staff.
