Today is the day that the Detroit Lions kick off the 2014 NFL season, and they will do so against the New York Giants, on Monday Night Football. The Detroit Lions are coming off one of the biggest collapses they have faced in franchise history, and they are looking to stop the trend early on in this season.
The Lions defense looks like they are having fun playing together, and even though the secondary needs work they played well the entire preseason. Teryl Austin has his defense primed for a big season, but the players have to get out on the field and execute on game day.Teryl Austin and the Lions linebackers have one thing on their mind today, and that is making Eli Manning miserable.
The Detroit defensive line looks about as formidable as ever. Nick Fairley has earned his starting job back, and the Lions are getting pressure on the quarterbacks they have played thus far. The Detroit Lions’ defense is ready to cause problems for Eli. Eli and the Giants’ offense had struggled to score points this preseason, and their job is not going to get easier against the fast paced Lions defense. Eli Manning and the Giants’ new offensive coordinator have had a lot of problems with their offense, and without Odell Beckham Jr., Eli is down another target.
If the Giants want to compete with the Lions at home at Ford Field, then it will have to be done on the defensive side of the ball. The Giants also have a very talented defensive line, and they are very good at rushing the passer. In order to stop the Lions, the Giants will need to stop their run, though, and that has been a problem for the Giants.
The talented Detroit defense could have a few problems of their own as James Ihedigbo is listed doubtful to play the season opener. Ihedigbo was one of the Lions’ best players in the secondary this preseason, and losing him definitely hurts the Detroit pass defense.
The Lions are set to take on the Giants tonight, and Detroit should be able to start the season off with a win at home. It is hard to see the Giants putting up enough points to compete with the Lions, but it will definitely be a hard fought contest.
