So you’re telling me there’s a chance….
Fans of the Detroit Lions probably all checked out after the first few weeks of the season. They played one good half in San Diego, got into a shootout resulting in a victory of their hated rivals from Chicago, and escaped with a win in Green Bay thanks to some solid defense. Other than that, they’ve looked like the same old Lions.
Now mathematically, the Lions, nor any team, is eliminated from playoff contention yet, and no player or coach will tell you so. According to one website that measures playoff probability via mass amounts of simulations, despite another frustrating and tumultuous season from the boys in Honolulu blue, Detroit still has a 1.272% chance of making the playoffs.
The best part about all of this? It’s not even the lowest in the NFL. Only the Cleveland Browns (0.91%) and the Baltimore Ravens (1.03%) have worse odds than the Lions. The website also calculates a 0.034% chance of coming out on top in the NFC North division.
I mean, I guess it could happen. When you look at the NFC picture, nobody seems to want to win the NFC East, which is looking like a .500 team or worse will win the division. There are Wild Card threats in both the North and South divisions and, hey, the Lions already have a victory over the Bears and Packers and still have games vs. the Saints, Rams, and 49ers, all of who are underachieving as well.
So, hypothetically speaking, they are still alive. In the minds and guts of Lions’ faithful? No chance.
