A Voice Across Generations

Lane’s resume reads like a love letter to Detroit sports. Best remembered for his work alongside Ernie Harwell on Detroit Tigers radio broadcasts from 1967 to 1972, Lane also teamed up with George Kell for two seasons of Tigers games. His smooth delivery and deep knowledge of the game made him a trusted companion for fans across Michigan.

But baseball was only part of his story. Lane served as a color analyst on Detroit Lions radio, called college games for Michigan State, Michigan, and the University of Detroit, and even worked with the Cincinnati Reds. For basketball fans, he was a familiar face in Detroit Pistons pre- and postgame coverage.

And then there was hockey. Beginning in 1985, Lane became the on-air host for the Detroit Red Wings on TV for 16 seasons. His approachable style and sharp insights earned him the affectionate nickname “Razor”, a moniker fans and colleagues used with pride.

A Career That Endured

Even after his prime broadcasting years, Lane never strayed too far from the booth. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, he once again filled in on Tigers broadcasts, reminding everyone why his voice had become such an integral part of Detroit’s sports soundtrack.
