I remember this one like it was yesterday. The Detroit Red Wings were up 3-2 against the rival Toronto Maple Leafs in the waning minutes of the second period. After Jonas Gustavsson slid to make a save to the left of the net, the puck was instead passed back to Dion Phaneuf, who had just come off the bench. He had a wide open net with Gustavsson almost outside the left side of the crease. As he let the wrister go, Gustavsson dove across the crease and stuck his paddle out, catching the puck with it before it could enter the net, and it was subsequently cleared away from the net. Phaneuf and the entire Toronto bench thought he had scored on the play, which made it all the sweeter watching them realize he hadn’t.
