I’ll be honest, I never expected to be writing what I’m about to write; EMU and WMU are playing a very compelling rivalry game.

The Eagles have basically come back from the dead to come within one game of going to only their second bowl game in program history and first since 1987. Head coach Chris Creighton and his staff have pulled off a very impressive feat by turning this program around in a way that no one outside of that locker room believed could happen.

Western Michigan meanwhile continues to rise under enigmatic head coach P. J. Fleck. Fleck has given the mantra “Row the Boat” a new meaning as the battle cry for the upstart Broncos. They have now been nationally ranked for two weeks in the AP poll and continue to rise the ranks by impressing in every game they play. Seven different Broncos have won MAC player of the week awards while QB Zach Terrell and WR Corey Davis have turned into one of the most dangerous combinations in the entire nation. While no one may have had this game on their radar at the start of the year, the success of both teams makes this rivalry game possibly even more compelling than another in-state battle next week.
